Highlights you can experience

Destination 1: Wellington

Wellington offers a great array of attractions in the city as well as nearby natural wonders. Highlights in the city include the interactive Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa which wonderfully highlights Maori culture and should be a must-visit. The Wellington Botanic Garden offers wonderful gardens as well as the Carter Observatory and Planetarium. Shopping in town is great and Cuba Street offers the best shops in town. Be sure to stop at Zealandia, a 500-acre fenced-in ecosanctuary which aims to restore the area’s flora and fauna to its pre-human state! Mount Victoria offers panoramic views of the city and region and also stood in for the woods of Hobbiton - sure to delight Lord of the Rings fans. For all fans of Peter Jackson’s two Middle-earth trilogy’s and his other work, a visit to and tour of the Weta Cave Workshop is a must.

Destination 2: Rotorua

As you head for Rotorua be sure to stop at the Hobbiton Movie Set for a day of adventure - it appears exactly as it did in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy. Rotorua is a top destination for relaxation and culture in New Zealand. Renowned for its geothermal activity, visitors can visit the Te Puia geyser, Kuirau Thermal Park’s mud pools, the hot springs of Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and the thermal waters at Polynesian Spa. The region is also home to the living Maori villages of Mitai and Tamaki which offer traditional song and dance performances and superb cultural insights. A visit to the Rotorua Museum is a must to learn more about the history of the indigenous Te Awawa people as well as European settlers.

Destination 3 and 5: Auckland

Auckland, known as the city of sails, has embraced its harbour location and its natural surroundings. With a focus on nature and adventure, there are many activities to enjoy in the city. You can sail on an America’s Cup racing yacht and cruise the islands of Hauraki Gulf. Auckland Domain is a downtown park spread over 185 acres and situated on an ancient volcanic crater - the wonderful War Memorial Museum is in the gardens as well. For shopping, head down to Queen Street and for those looking for more adventure, there is the local Auckland Sky Tower offering base jumps from over 700 feet high. Soak up the entertainment and restaurants options in Viaduct Harbour and make a day trip to nearby Waiheke Island for its beaches and world-class wineries.

Destination 4: Paihia

The town of Paihia is the perfect base for exploring the Bay of Islands - one of New Zealand’s premier natural attractions. From here you can take a cruise or take a kayak tour to explore the waters and beaches of the bay. Swimming with dolphins is a top activity here and a once in a lifetime experience! The bay is also home to some of New Zealand’s (and the world’s) best offshore sportfishing as well as wonderful opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling. Nearby to town is the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and the Museum of Waitangi. The grounds are noted as the birthplace of modern New Zealand treaty signing between the British settlers and Maori tribes.
