Coastal and cultural highlights of the north
From 9 days

You’ll enjoy a road trip along the coast of the North Island and visit cities such as Wellington and Auckland on your drive. These are two cities that pack a punch when it comes to outdoor activities, fine cuisine, and culture. A bay with plenty of nature highlights such as springs and woodlands will feel like an adventurer’s playground as you bridge walk or zipline between trees. Before your trip ends, you’ll hop off land and boat cruise towards islands where you can swim in the water with dolphins and deep dive to explore marine life.

1. Wellington
Begin your trip in the capital city of Wellington where a national museum takes you back to the country’s ancient roots as you learn of the Māori people. A city gallery with a modern approach to art celebrates artists from around the world. But perhaps it is the Botanic Gardens 3,000 roses that you’ll enjoy most once having hopped off a cable car ride that opens your eyes to a city surrounded by forested hills.
2. Rotorua
The Bay of Plenty is your next stop and with hot springs, woodland walks, and mud pools this lakeside city is a perfect location to unwind and explore. There are 18 lakes that surround the city, enjoy a fish, white what raft or canopy tour in nature. A craft beer as you sit back in a tranquil setting and watch a sunset will feel well-earned after so much adventure.
3. Auckland
Next up is Auckland, an action-packed city with world-class activities and cuisine. With harbours that offer boat cruises to the islands of the Hauraki Gulf, you can cruise the marine rich waters with ease. In the city itself, you are spoilt for choice: a 75-hectare park known as Auckland Domain, an aquarium where you can swim with sharks, or a bridge nicknamed the “Coat Hanger” invites you to take a leap of faith from its façade.
4. Paihia
Paihia is more than a base to the Bay of Islands, it’s a town full of outdoor activities. Cruise in a catamaran to Hole in the Rock to see dolphins. A kayak tour is an excellent way to explore the east coast of the North Island. A snorkel or dive in Pomare Bay’s blue water will round off a fabulous day.
5. Auckland
Return to Auckland for your final destination as you road trip through New Zealand. In the city take some time for yourself and be with nature as you visit the Tiritiri Matangi Open Sanctuary. Combining a love for birds with outdoor activities, notable wildlife include the little spotted kiwi, tuis, and takahes.
