Your journey starts in Johannesburg, where you’ll have no shortage of activities to keep you busy and entertained. History and cultural museums are a highlight here, with the Apartheid and Hector Pieterson museums focusing on the rise and fall of the South African era of segregation and oppression. To get a better insight into the current atmosphere be sure to visit the districts of Soweto and Maboneng. Soweto is a former township but is now the cultural and historical centre of Johannesburg. Worthwhile attractions here include Vilakazi Street, with the former homes of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, the Hector Pieterson Museum and the Credo Mutwa Cultural Centre. Maboneng, on the other hand, is the art and food centre of the city. Highlights here are the Market on Main, POPArt Theatre and the Museum of African Design.
Named for the visible shimmer and haze that develops in the area from the summer heat, Hazyview is a gateway town to numerous, wonderful attractions, namely the Panorama driving route with God’s Window viewpoint and the Three Rondavels but also the famous Kruger National Park. Other than the numerous safari opportunities at wildlife parks and nature reserves, visitors can also visit wildlife rehabilitation centres, reptile parks and health spas. For the more adventurous souls, abseiling down rock faces, river rafting and quad bike tours are available. Two not to be missed experiences in the area also include elephant rides and an unforgettable hot-air balloon safari over the valley is always a highlight on any South African holiday.
One of the world’s best-known wildlife parks, Kruger National Park enchants everyone who visits. Kruger is an iconic safari destination and offers its guests a look at Africa at its most natural. At roughly 5 million acres, you can be sure that there is an amazingly diverse amount of wildlife and landscapes to discover. Kruger National Park has a safari for every budget and group. Whether you are a couple on your honeymoon or large family having a reunion, you’ll find just what you want at Kruger. Safari’s on offer range from self-drive options for day-trippers, to daily sunrise and sunset drives for those at an on-site lodge. Due to the immense size of the park, there are multiple game routes available and really too much to see and do on one trip. Highlights include seeing the Big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) as well as numerous other birds and wildlife!
A smaller wildlife park than others in the area, at just over 10,000 acres Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary still offers unique and interesting wildlife viewing opportunities. Located in Ezulwini Valley (or Valley of Heaven) the sanctuary offers guided and self-guided tours with a vehicle as well as on foot or even on mountain bike or horseback. Walking tours can be taken on your own if you prefer - due to the limited number of predatory animals in the park. The most popular wildlife to be seen here are hippopotamus, wildebeest, zebra and crocodile. The sanctuary also offers fantastic birding opportunities, botanical and nature trails and the wonderful Umphakatsi cultural experience nearby.
St. Lucia is noted as South Africa’s first World-Heritage site. This stems from the fantastic nature and wildlife that can be found in the area. The town is located on the eastern coast of South Africa, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and St. Lucia Estuary. From wetlands to dry savannah, you can find it all around St. Lucia. The main attraction here is probably the Hippos, which can be seen by boat cruise and sometimes even wandering in town! Crocodiles, as well as Leatherback and Loggerhead turtles and whale sharks, are other area highlights found near this coastal town. On top of these amazing wildlife viewing opportunities, you can also enjoy the Big 5 at nearby Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park - Africa's oldest game reserve. Cultural villages are located in the region as well, such as the Dumazulu Traditional Village, that is wonderful to explore.
Your trip ends in the vibrant, beachfront city of Durban. The main attraction here is definitely the amazing coastline and the golden beaches facing the Indian ocean. This is highlighted by the “Golden Mile”, a beachfront promenade featuring restaurants, cafes, shops and attractions. Many water-based activities are on tap here, such as scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, surfing and kiteboarding. The city itself offers a wonderful mix of cultures, with a large Indian community mixing its food and heritage with the locals, offering a unique experience within Africa. Local attractions in Durban include uShaka Marine World, a theme park offering animal and marine life experiences as well as waterslides and other adventures. Open-air markets, like the Victoria Street Market, are other highlights unique to Durban with its African, Asian and Indian communities selling local food and goods. Those looking for a more British feeling won’t go wrong with a visit to the Durban Botanical Gardens.
